Alibaba Singles’ Day 2016: Chris Dunne at FeedbackExpress reports that Alibaba chalked up a record $17.79 billion (120.7 billion yuan) in gross merchandise volume (GMV) on Singles Day’, an increase of 32% year-on-year. Growth rate was lower than the 60% experienced in 2015. In the first five minutes, the Chinese ecommerce giant processed $1 billion on its mobile payment platform, Alipay. Across Alibaba’s ecommerce platforms, mainly Tmall.com and Taobao Marketplace, some 1.04 billion payment transactions were processed, compared to last year’s 710 million. Continue reading…

Growth History
Over the past 5 years, Shopify has seen its biggest growth. In 2012, Shopify had 41,910 merchants using its platform and has grown by 1000% since then. eBay continues shift to “Amazon-esque” business: Katie Roof at TechCrunch reports on eBay’s third-quarter earnings. The company brought in revenue of $2.22 billion, an increase of 6% year-on-year. Adjusted earnings per share came in at 45 cents, slightly above the analyst consensus of 44 cents. Adjusted net income was also down from the same period in the year before, as sales and marketing and other costs increased.  A trademark is a symbol, phrase, or some other device that distinguishes ownership of a product or service.  For example, the way that McDonald’s writes the “M” and the Nike swoosh are both trademarks.  When you see either, you know what to expect.

United States federal law governs trademarks.  Trademarks are described in section 32(1) of the Lanham Act a set of federal laws. A trademark is intended to stand as a mark of quality.  They can be viewed at the government’s website for the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).

People that buy products from Amazon third-party sellers’ often rely on trademarks when making purchases.  When they see a trademark, buyers know they are getting quality goods even though the seller is not an authorized reseller.

Trademark infringement occurs when someone takes a trademark, like the Nike swoosh, and puts it on a non-Nike shirt. If you take someone’s mark and put it on your product, that is clearly trademark infringement.
